What:

The US Treasury Bureau of the Fiscal Service is sending e-mails to TreasuryDirect customers encouraging those with Certificates of Indebtedness (C of I) to redeem their C of I.

How you can help:

If you are wondering why you were contacted or if the e-mail is legitimate, here is more information:

• The U.S. Treasury is asking customers to cash out (redeem) any C of I they hold in their account.
• Your C of I is not currently accruing any interest so holding it limits its growth potential. Consider other options for your C of I, such as cashing it out or using it to purchase a Treasury marketable security.
• C of I can be redeemed by logging into TreasuryDirect, going to the ManageDirect tab, selecting the “Redeem Securities” link, selecting the “C of I” radio button, and then selecting a payment destination bank for the C of I.
• C of I is no longer available for purchase through BuyDirect or as a payment destination.
• If you received an e-mail fromsubscriptions@subscriptions.treas.gov about redeeming C of I, it is a valid e-mail (see e-mail below).

Subject: TreasuryDirect: How Certificates of Indebtedness Can Help Fund Summer Fun

Dear TreasuryDirect Customer,

With warmer weather on the way, consider cashing out your Certificate(s) of Indebtedness (C of I) to fund your outdoor fun, use it to purchase a Treasury marketable security, or reinvest it into more productive savings accounts. Your C of I is not currently accruing any interest.

Why You Should Take Action

Our records show that your account holds unredeemed C of I. C of I is a non-interest-earning Treasury security, so holding funds in C of I limits their growth potential.

How to Take Action

To redeem C of I, log into your TreasuryDirect account, go to the ManageDirect tab, select the “Redeem Securities” link and the radio button “C of I”, then choose a payment destination bank. Learn more about the C of I redemption process.

Once you have cashed out your C of I, here is how to purchase a Treasury marketable security.

Remember that C of I is no longer available for purchase through BuyDirect and cannot be selected as a new payment destination.
